Compatible Laserdisc Players - Pioneer PR-8210A

Pioneer PR-8210A - Service Manual (118 pages)

Laserdisc Player Replacement - Only one successful method for replacing the PR-8210A laserdisc player in Star Rider has been developed.  The Dexter board is a drop-in replacement* which poses as the laserdisc player and plays the video for the game digitally, from a custom file format without video compression.  Dexter accepts the original commands from the PCB through the original interface cable.  Dexter has been going in and out of production multiple times, per demand, via pre-order process only.
*Dexter is 100% compatible as of rev 3g.   Rev 3d, 3e, & 3f are fully compatible when the PIF ROM update (above) is installed.

Star Rider will not work with a regular PR-8210 laserdisc player.  For more information on how the PR-8210 & PR-8210A communicate with arcade games, check out the PR-8210 / PR-8210A page.

Home Brew Conversion - The Pioneer PR-8210A Conversion document from Andrew Hepburn shows how to transplant parts out of a dead PR-8210A into a working PR-8210 to convert it for use with Star Rider.

PIF ROM Update - If your game is prone to intermittent software crashes and rebooting, try Matt Ownby's PIF ROM Update (ROM #26 on the PIF board at location U3) to allow greater tolerance with disc player response time.
